The historic town of Scarborough

Scarborough has a long and interesting history, which includes being the site of the first lifeboat station in the country. Throughout its history, Scarborough has been a popular spot for visitors and is still a popular destination today. Its picturesque seaside location and quaint cobbled streets make it a beautiful place to explore and enjoy. With its fascinating past and vibrant present, Scarborough is a unique and special town that continues to draw in visitors from near and far.

  1. Scarborough was first founded in 966 AD by the Vikings and is one of the oldest towns in England.

It was developed as a fishing village, and later became a popular seaside resort.



 

      2. The Scarborough Castle was built in the 11th century and is now a Grade I listed building.



It was first built as a wooden motte and bailey castle by William le Gros, Count of Aumale in the 11th century and was later rebuilt in stone by Henry II in the 12th century. The castle was once home to the royal family of England, and today it stands as a remarkable symbol of English history.


The castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens and stunning views of the sea and is the perfect spot for a day out. The castle walls and towers are still standing strong after centuries of wear and tear, and the keep has been well preserved. Inside the keep, visitors can explore the King's Chamber, the chapel, the dungeons, and the battlements.


The castle's grounds are also a great place to explore and take in the history of the area, as well as its stunning scenery. Visitors can also take part in interactive activities such as archery and discover more about the castle's history through the interactive displays.

3.  In the 19th century, Scarborough was a popular resort and spa town that attracted many visitors, including Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens.


Due to its naturally occurring sulphur springs. Tourists from all over the country flocked to Scarborough to experience the healing waters and the therapeutic atmosphere of the town.


In the 19th century, the town was bustling with grand hotels, bathhouses, and other attractions that drew visitors from all walks of life. 4. The Scarborough Spa was built in 1806 and is one of the oldest surviving seaside spas in the world.

It is famous for its outside bandstand where on a summers day you can sit in a deck chair and listen to the Spa orchestra for free.

5. The Stephen Joseph Theatre was the first theatre-in-the-round in the UK and was established in 1955. It is still a popular venue for plays, concerts, and other events.
