1. Peasholm Park

Peasholm Park is a must see for anyone during a visit to Scarborough. The oriental themed municipal park boasts streams a waterfall and numerous mini bridges and is steeped in history. It could be a quick stroll around the lake before breakfast, a ride in a dragon boat, a game of crazy golf, listen to the band in the band stand or watching the navel battle.

Situated at the bottom of Columbus Ravine it is just across the road from Northstead Manor Gardens that boasts the largest Open Air Theatre in Europe and hosts many international bands during the summer into autumn. There is also the historic water chute that has been going since 1932, with a boating lake. For those that like heights there is the Skytrail outdoor activity centre. There is also the miniature railway that can take you down to the Sea Life Centre.

If you walk out of the north exit you will be on the North Bay. There is a path so you can walk even if the tide is in (except extreme winter high tides).

2. Scarborough Castle

If you come to Scarborough unless you are just passing through, you will see the castle. Perched up on the hill top it was first built in 1159, it has had many additions since then, which they are keen to tell you if you visit. Until you go onto the castle grounds you are unable to comprehend the immense site the castle sits on. It is well worth the visit to the top at least once to see the beautiful views. There is also a heritage shop selling amazing produce.

Just outside the entrance to the grounds of the castle is St Mary's church where Anne Bronte is buried. You are also able to see right across the South bay to nearby resorts.

3. Sea Life Centre

The nicest way to get to the Sea Life Centre is to walk along the North bay. The unique Tipi design helps you find your way. You can get to their pirate crazy golf from this entrance, without going into the main building.

There are plenty of things to see like the seals and the seal hospital. You ca walk through the penguin enclosure if infection allows. you can feed the various sea creatures including the ray and the pyjama sharks. There is even a turtle aged between 50 and 60 that they rescued from the Greek island of Zakynthos where it was injured by a propeller from a boat.

4. Alpermare Waterpark

There is the new addition of the indoor spa for those who want to be pampered.

5. North Bay Beach

No seaside trip is complete without a visit to the beach. North Bay boast a beautiful beach with rock pools when the sea is far enough out. The sand is ideal for making sand castles and there is plenty of it.

There are donkeys for the young ones to have their traditional donkey ride.

There are beach chalets that can be hired (or bought) right on the beach front for more privacy when changing. They add the traditional feel with their look.

There are also a few small eateries and takeaways just off the beach so that you don't have to go far. Not too many so that the North Bay retains its quiet status.

As you may have noticed all of these places are in the beautiful serene North Bay. There are plenty of things to do in the town centre such as the Escape rooms great for those that like puzzles, maritime museum. There is the South Bay with its beach and lifeboat centre and the row of traditional amusement arcades, fish and chip shops and sea front huts selling winkles etc.

Do I need holiday insurance for a staycation?

What is a Staycation?

Firstly, what is a staycation? The traditional meaning of the term was a holiday based at home. Either a holiday spent entirely at home or

using the home as a base and having days out.

If this is what you mean by a staycation then no you don't need insurance. What will there be to claim for? What additional costs would you have to pay?

Over the last few years the term staycation has come to mean a holiday taken in your home country.

This is totally different to a holiday based at home and yes it is advisable to have holiday insurance for this.

Why?

What happens if you fall ill and can't go on holiday, do you loose the deposit on the stay? Do you have to pay in full?
What happens if you fall ill or have an accident on holiday? Does your partner have to pay for additional accommodation while you are in hospital? Can you get upstairs to your room with a broken leg or do you need to find alternative accommodation?
What if I lost something while away?

Would you buy Travel insurance if you were going abroad?

If the answer is yes, then why wouldn't you get it for the UK? Ok the cost implications are higher abroad. Any medical assistance will need to be paid for, flight charges.

If you cancel your holiday, the accommodation abroad will still need to be paid by yourself or the insurance. If it is UK why would it be different. They have lost out by reserving the room and are too late to get an alternative booking. Some of these accommodation providers work on very small margins and not afford to lose this income especially during these covid times.

If you have multi trip insurance for your holidays abroad, did you know that it will probably cover you for your UK holidays as well? Many people take out multi trip holiday insurance as they are going abroad more than once, but have never thought of claiming when they have to cancel a holiday in the UK.

How much?

I thought I would do a quick quote to see how much travel insurance would cost in these covid times. for myself + 1 to get 15 months basic UK multi trip travel insurance was £40. This was with "Staysure" plenty of other companies, not a recommendation just a price (though very helpful customer service). Their prices start from £32, other insurances may be cheaper as will single trip insurance. This insurance did cover me if I was unable to go on holiday due to having covid or other illness.

If only for your own peace of mind you are better getting travel insurance. If you have multi trip for going a broad you are probably covered. (Please check with your provider and discuss your requirements).

Most importantly make sure you enjoy your holiday.

Is the Full English breakfast a thing of the past?

Should the breakfast be put to bed?

The Full English Breakfast was traditionally part of the full experience of a holiday in England (Scottish in Scotland and Welsh in Wales).

Part of the looking forward to your holiday phase, was looking forward to a Full English breakfast. Would there be fried bread? would it be beans or tomato?

I am one of those who looks forward to the breakfast while staying in the UK. My choice of accommodation is very much influenced by the breakfast offering. If the accommodation looks like they are using cheap sausages (my pet hate), or no cooked breakfast at all then I will probably choose somewhere else. I say probably because it will depend on the nature of my stay.

There are other important factors that would supersede this. If it was close to somewhere I was going, or easy to find on the edge of a town, then getting there or getting what I had planned to see become more important. Another consideration heightened by the current pandemic is, does it look clean? It might have the best breakfast, but if you don't feel comfortable that the bedroom is clean how can you believe the kitchen is clean?

So this is my opinion.

I still love chance of a Full English/Scottish/Welsh breakfast, though if I was staying for 5 days or more I would like another cooked alternative. I also like to have the choice of fresh fruit, some kind of pastry be it a croissants or pain au chocolate and toast.

It would be no surprise to hear that at the Rose Dene we serve a Full English breakfast made from free range award winning sausage and bacon from local butchers Trotters. Our eggs are local free range. We try to support local producers and businesses where we can. During normal times (whatever that will look like going forward), we offer alternative cooked options such as scrambled eggs and beans on toast. We offer fresh fruit, pastries, unlimited toast. We have yoghurts, sometimes I make my own as I do with the jam and gluten free bread. (It will all depend on what time I get). Unlimited fresh ground coffee and tea.

Why the question?

Time change and what people want change. Just because I still would want a Full English breakfast when I have a holiday in this country, doesn't mean everyone does.

There is not a lot of point me spending money on good ingredients to cook if people are only eating a Full English breakfast because they think they have paid for it. It would make my life so much easier if we didn't serve a cooked option, so I need to know it is what people want.

I was watching the new series of "four in a bed" and the discussion came to this, as only 2 venues offered a cooked breakfast. Times change and tastes change. The term fried breakfast or "fry up" always conjures up the image of food swimming in grease or at the very least something unhealthy. We prefer the term Full English as there is very little fried or if it is, it has only just seen the oil not dived in.

Vegetarianism and veganism are on the increase, we offer a vegetarian alternative which is still basically a Full English. We have yet to have a vegan stay though as veganism is usually something believed in strongly then all parties tend to be vegan and prefer to use the vegan B&Bs. We would be able to offer an alternative I just couldn't tell you what it would be.

There are those that do not like to eat breakfast and would rather have the extra time in bed. Though breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day and is what gives the body the fuel it needs to manage the day ahead. I am sure the odd day missed for a couple of hours of zzz's will not harm.

Bank Holiday at the Seaside

Bank holiday Mondays in Scarborough are the traditional day for motorbikes and scooters to have a ride out. In the past there has been trouble as rival gangs clash on the seafront. These days they tend to be an older generation taking their pride and joy for a run out while the weather is (hopefully) nice.

Bank holidays were the day we rarely ventured to the coast on the grounds it would be too busy and nowhere to park. The roads would be gridlocked with cars. In my youth it was when some cars were unable to make it up Whitwell hill, and ended up backing up the traffic as drivers waited to overtake. Dad driven mad by the relentless question from the back "Are we there yet?"

As the bank holiday weekend arrives, please remember we are all still under restrictions which limit what we can do this weekend. Obviously social distancing is in place so hopefully everyone doesn't decide to come as there isn't the space.

The only food and drink available if from takeaways. Toilet facilities are very limited. If you plan to travel by public transport and it rains, you are going to get wet. We are looking forward to welcoming tourists back to Scarborough, but please be patient. If we are careful most places will be open in time for the bank holiday at the end of May. By August bank holiday if everything goes to plan all restrictions will have been lifted.

Those takeaways that are open are thankful for your business, but please remember do not feed the gulls and take your rubbish home.

Scarborough is beautiful place for sightseeing, and we welcome respectful visitors. If everyone decides to visit us, we will have too many visitors. This may end up delaying some businesses opening.

Naivety, cheeky or fraudulent?

Is anyone really unaware we are in a pandemic?

I ask because recently we have had a few people surprised that we are closed by law. They had heard of Corona virus, but didn't know it was causing businesses to stay shut their response when I said we were closed was "when did that happen". He was wanting to book a room for last weekend.

I get that the dates are not chiselled into everyone's brains the same as those in the business whose livelihood is entwined with it. we would expect a few people asking for dates when the self catering can open totally understandable to get confused with the dates, but they are not bemused when you correct them. Usually people ask if we are open for whatever date they want, then adjust their dates to suit what is allowed.

Surely after the year we have had, everybody is aware there are businesses required to close even if they are unaware of the precise dates.

Then we have the people who think they are exempt to lockdown and try to take advantage of the exceptions. They are coming to look at houses have they got appointments booked, no - so not allowed. Did they genuinely not realise? Thought I wouldn't check or fancied a couple of days away. People with exemptions need to be able to prove it. It does make us in hospitality feel uncomfortable. We are wired to offer a service, those that enjoy their job will go out of their way to make you feel welcome so you can enjoy your time with them. The direct questions and suspicion are alien concepts. luckily for me I haven't had many of these calls. Though I am always shocked that they ask if I know anywhere that would take them. "Not if it is against the law"

I hove been dismayed by the amount of fellow hospitality owners that have been hoodwinked into letting people stay. They have tried all the excuses under the sun and some have succeeded. It is sad that there are those that think they are above the law, that think they are so important that they can put lives at risk (spreading the virus, the reason for lockdown), livelihoods at risk (hospitality owners face fines for hosting), just so they can have a couple of days away. Everything is closed so they can't go anywhere.

It does feel unfair that it has fallen on the hospitality business to do the checks and turn business away rather than be able to assume that only people with legitimate reasons will want to book.

During the lockdown we have remained closed, but we have had legitimate calls from people wanting to stay.

The main reason we decided to stay closed is because there is nowhere to eat except outside. Our dinning room has to remain shut, and I don't want people to eat in the rooms. We don't allow takeaways in the rooms during normal times, they are not going to cause less damage or smell because there is a pandemic.

Though when we say we are closed, it just means people can not stay with us until after the 17th May. We are busy refurbishing our first floor twin bathroom amongst other smaller updates and cleaning.

We are also open to take bookings, opening on Wednesday 19th May. Bookings can be re-scheduled if your plans change, deposits are refundable up to 7 days before your stay at the moment. (Though we reserve the right to charge an admin charge of 10%.)

First day of Spring

Feeling Optimistic

The first day of spring is like a fresh start. Hopefully the weather is starting to get better, plants are starting to flower and it lifts our mood, making us feel optimistic for the future.

Monday I had my first Covid-19 vaccination (yes I am really that old), which increased my positive attitude. Boris says we are still on track for re-opening on 17th May.

I can start planning and cleaning and getting the Rose Dene ready to accept guests again.

It is surprising how much better you feel when things are positive. One of the reasons I try to look for the positive in every situation. (This has not always been possible over the last year).

We have notice an increase in the number of bookings coming through for the summer. So I am obviously not the only one feeling positive. Some dates are fully booked. People are starting to think of the summer and what they want to do to make the most of their new freedoms.

The Open Air theatre is busy shuffling current artist dates about to accommodate the lockdown restrictions. Once these are confirmed I believe there are more artists to be announced. Hopefully people who have dates changing are able to re-book accommodation for the new dates.

I know people are looking for refundable bookings as there is nothing certain, it seems that people do not consider holiday insurance for UK, but would not go abroad without it. Apart from a flight, what is the difference? It would certainly cover most situations and give them piece of mind.

Once upon a time all deposits on whatever you were securing were non-refundable. That was the point. This meant the seller had payment if you changed your mind that covered them for the not being able to sell the product or service or selling at a reduced price to recoup something.

For example Fred is working late on Friday, so he books Saturday and Sunday night. No problem there, deposit taken. Three months later he rings to say he can't come as he has to work the Saturday now. In the mean time we have received other bookings for Wed, Thurs, Fri of that week and somebody else books 5 nights starting the Monday. This means when Fred cancels his booking we are left with a 2 night gap. Most of our weekend bookings are Fri/Sat, it is more likely we are left with these dates the nearer we get to the event. We could loose out through no fault of our own, yet we are expected to waiver the cost yet it would be accepted had it been abroad.

All that said we know it is a different situation this year. If we are unable to open due to restrictions, we will fully refund direct bookings or move the date. If you need to cancel, bookings are fully refundable this year to 7 days before your stay. We do prefer you to move the booking if possible. If it is less than 7 days, there is no refund, but if you do not show up you will be charged the full amount of your stay, so please let us know. We may be able to let you move the date or use at least part of the deposit towards another stay with us.

Relax, the best thing to do is decide when you want to come, the difficult thing is to decide which room you want. Then if you change your mind we will just change your booking for you.

The worst thing you can do is wait to see what happens and then find all the dates you want have gone.

First shoots of recovery

Since Boris made his announcement saying we were able to open (hopefully) from the 17th May the telephone has started ringing again.

Scarborough council tourism have a plan in place to encourage you to visit, entertain you while you are here, and keep you safe.

The Open Air theatre are in the process of moving the early June concerts to after the 21st June when more restrictions are lifted. They also have new concerts to announce.

We are expecting July, August and September to be very busy here at the Rose Dene as people gain more confidence in going away from home.

To help you book with confidence we are currently offering relaxed cancellation terms of £50 deposit refundable up to 7 days before you ae due to stay. This is likely to go back to the usual deposit of your first nights stay up to 14 days before your stay. Obviously whatever the terms at the time of booking will continue throughout your booking. Should we not be allowed to open, we can move your dates or refund your deposit, whichever suits you. We take the gamble out of booking early, and the disappointment from missing the holiday.

Spotlight on the Naval Warfare at Peasholm Park, Scarborough

A childhood favourite of mine

As a child one of my favourite things to do on a day out was to go to Scarborough to watch the Naval Warfare at Peasholm Park, Scarborough.

The Navel Warfare display is the oldest continuously simulated battle in the country. It started in 1927.

In the early days, the models were First World War battleships, called Dreadnaughts, mystery ships called Q-ships, a passenger liner called Orantes and a U-boat.

After the Second World War, the fleet was replaced with new vessels – this time the battle that was recreated was the Battle of the River Plate.

The British boats were HMS Ajax, Achilles and Exeter. The German battleship was the Graf Von Spee; the Royal Mail liner Asturias and a submarine completed the new fleet.

Around 1960, aircraft were introduced, altering the play of the ships but adding to the excitement for audiences who could not seem to get enough of the Battles!

Also in the 1960s more ships were added to the fleet – HMS Jervis Bay, British Pride and even the Ark Royal.

When the display started all the vessels were powered by men in the boats, electricity was added to some in later years. Although some of the smaller boats are steered by electricity and electricity is certainly used to power the aircraft, most of the boats in the Park, even today, are powered by Scarborough Borough Council employees! Again these are the only display boats powered my manpower.

5 Mistakes people make with their staycation

Staycations are a great way of seeing the beautiful county that we live in

And because they're so easy to arrange online it's often easy to make these 5 staycation mistakes and spoil their time away.

1. On line travel agents (OTA’s)

Not all accommodation providers use OTA’s, or only give the restricted dates and rooms. if this is the only place you look you may miss out on the best places to stay.

The room rates are higher on the OTA’s than if you booked them direct with the accommodation. This is due to the high levels of commission charge and accommodation inflating their prices to cover it. Did you know the accommodation may be shown to you in order of the most commission paid, which could be as high as 40%? Most people believe they are seeing the most popular/ best fit accommodation first.

Some accommodation offer perks for direct bookings e.g. earlier/later check in/check out, chocolate etc.

You may feel more secure booking through an OTA, but speaking to an independent accommodation provider with your requirements ensures you of the best deal for you. They will tell you their cancellation policies and are likely to be more lenient if plans change. OTA’s have no authority in the policies of individual properties, which all have differing policies.

2. Check the accommodation is where you want it to be

We have all done it. We search and scroll and by the time we have booked somewhere it is out of town when we wanted somewhere close to town. Now you have to pay for taxis when you wanted to walk. Or you have booked in town and it is too noisy to sleep. Maybe you have booked in at a venue that has live music all night and you wanted to have an early start next morning.

3. Make sure you find out what there is to see and do in the area

When you speak to your friends after your stay and they tell you their favourite place in the whole world is there and you didn’t know it existed. Or at breakfast everyone is singing songs by your favourite artist, only to find out you could have gone to see them in concert the night before.

4. Check the Policies of where you are staying

If check in time is 4pm and you arrive at 1pm without letting them know. It may be that there is no one about to let you in or give you a parking permit. Not the best start to your holiday. Is the accommodation pet free/adult only? It is your responsibility to check. If you turn up to an adult only B&B with a child, they can turn you away and charge you the full amount of your stay.

5. Enjoy your stay :)

If you have taken care of 1-4 you should be well on the way to enjoying your stay.

If there is something is not working in your room or you need to ask a question, please ask.

Accommodation providers rely on reviews for their business. Give them chance to solve the problem, then you are able to have a better stay, and people after you, as the accommodation provider is probably unaware of the issue. It could be it just works different to what you are used to, you need to put that switch on, you need this extra cable to plug that in etc. If you mention it in a review the accommodation provider will probably thank you for letting them know, but ask why you didn’t you tell them at the time and it would have been solved.

Had enough of Covid-19?

Exaggeration or cause for concern? Covid-19 over the last year has affected everybody in one way or another.

It has made some people scared to go out, while other believe it has been blown out of all proportion. The majority are somewhere in the middle.

Which one you personally believe really does not matter. When we are under restrictions, the more people comply, the more the Government figures go in the right direction, the sooner the restrictions are lifted.

It is frustrating that we can’t do what we want, but there are always times you can’t do what you want. Be it financial restrictions, availability etc.

At the end of the day what we are being asked to do is not putting us at risk, but protecting us.

What do I believe?

That there is a virus that spreads easily, to most people not too bad, but can kill. So because of that I am taking as many precautions as I can.

At the Rose Dene we are cleaning all the rooms using a disinfectant as usual.
Only now after the initial clean, all services are getting disinfected again with appropriate product. Including all touch areas.
Some items may be removed from the room if we feel it can’t be disinfected between guests.
Hand sanitizer is provided in all public areas and touch areas are frequently sprayed with alcohol sanitizer. (Smelly stuff).
We are allowing at least 3 hours between check out and check in (guidelines say virus is airborne no longer than this).
We are staggering breakfast so that we don’t have as many people in the breakfast room and we have done away with self-service elements.
Obviously we are abiding by all Government guidelines eg mask wearing, 2 metres etc.

If you are worried about the virus you can see we are doing everything we can to ensure your safety. If you are a non-believer, this does not impact your stay. So it is a win/win. We also have the “Good to go” certification and the AA accreditation.

We take the worry out of your stay.

For his podcasts Paddy speaks to people from a lot of different walks of life. Letting us know about new events and some of the treasures of Scarborough. For anybody that likes Scarborough it is a good source of information about the beautiful coastal town. The podcasts let you know who Paddy is talking to so you can decide which ones are of interest, there is bound to be something for everyone.

I was so nervous doing the interview. I listen to Paddy every morning during breakfast when we are open, so a bit star struck. Why can I speak to anybody for hours on a telephone, but as soon as they mention someone else will hear it, the nerves kick in. Not sure I will do another one in a hurry. I hope it all made sense and I don’t come across as a complete Womble.
